The New Settlers |
|
The waters were raging. The sky was stormy. Nobody thought they would make it. Then, finally, as if by magic, it stopped and the new settlers saw land. They didn’t know they would have to the settle the new land though. They had just been sent to deliver a package, and then they would be rewarded with land. The poor fools were practically swimming away in their excitement. ‘Land’, they thought. ‘Our own land.’ So they rowed faster than ever before toward the land. They handed off the package and were horrified as the package was handed back to them. “Here. All you need to settle this new land” said the French man whom they had given the package to. Jacques, the smarter of the two French settlers, replied, “We don’t want to be settlers. We just want land, back in France.” “Oui, oui. In France.”, said the other French man. “ I’m sorry, but now that you’re here, you are settlers. We don’t have nearly enough.” said Louie, the one who had received the package. |

The New Settlers “We have granted you land,” said Louie. Jacques was quick to answer, “ We came to deliver this package and now we will be leaving.” On his way to the boat he saw a hole in the bottom of it, he sighed and went back to the cabin and said that he had no choice of whether he wanted to stay or not. “How come?” said Edward. “There is a big hole in the bottom of my boat” Jacques replied “and now I shall have to stay here until I fix it.” Jacques went to the men and told them he would need them to show where the land was. Once on the land provided, Edward opened the package to find many old looking seeds, an ax head, many candles, and a few animal traps. “How are we going to live here with just a few tools.” Edward said. ”Maybe we should start hunting in the forest and planting those seeds. You Edward, can go around the forest hunting for food while I shall start planting the seeds in the field” Jacques said. Edward left for the forest while Jacques stayed and got out the seeds from the pocket he had sown on his pants. Jacques started wondering what could possibly be the outcome of this seed. Maybe fruit, maybe vegetable. Jacques plowed a small part of the field and started burying the seeds. He watered them and sat down to wait for his brother to come back with meat. Jacques looked at some of the seeds he was holding. They were red and speckled. He opened one seed with his hands and found there was a black leafy core to this seed. Jacques paced back and fourth for a minute until he saw his brother Edward. But Edward had not brought back any food. Instead he brought back a woman. Edward and the unknown women walked closer and closer until the woman gasped and said “The seeds!” |

The woman grabbed the remaining seeds out of Jacques hands and put them in a little pouch made out of tough, arid animal skin. The woman pushed her black bushy hair out of her view showing a vast, deep scar going down her wrinkly face. Puzzled Jacques followed the woman to an over crowded area. She then murmured something abrupt to what looked liked her king. Their ruler then caught sight of the new visitors and then raised his staff and yelled out, “for giving us this bag of seeds we shall grant some new land but on one condition, you shall only tell a maximum of 1 person about this”. “Okay” the new settlers replied. The settlers then sprinted over to their great polished ship but as they were about to set off to go back to France, the front of their boat started to sink but luckily for them the ship touched the bottom of the shallow water leaving the crew unharmed. The Islanders ran to shore and they gathered all their men. The crewmembers threw a hard braded rope so the islanders could pull them in. When they got pulled in the crew was so disappointed the islanders offered them a ship. The crew shouted, “thank you”! The islanders lead them to their new ship. When the crew saw the tremendous, sturdy ship their mouths dropped to the ground in amazement. The islanders and the crewmembers then gathered and cut down trees and then carefully pulled the gigantic ship on the trees and used the trees to roll the ship to the shore. Then the crewmembers jumped on the ship and off they went back to France. On the way back there was another big storm that was beginning. The ship rocked from side-to-side. Terrified the crewmembers shouted, they thought they were on a roller coaster that was never going to end! A hard night past and the crew were exhausted from the suicidal waves. Dawn rose when the ship reached France’s docks. With the remaining energy the crew had they walked to the king’s palace with smirks on their faces. When the king saw there faces he then shouted “hooray”, and the king was so glad that he told the crew that the land that they had aquired was now theirs to keep. Two days past and the crew were all rested up so they started off to their new land. With the crew so excited they never noticed the big fancy ship behind them. Not knowing they were getting followed, the crew led their king to the new island and when the islanders caught sight of the two ships he immediately banished the crew from ever coming back. With the crew not happy they started a wild war on the island and the island was destroyed. That’s how the big wars over colonization began. |
