Exploring vocabulary, the sound aspect of
language, playing with words and exploring writing are all part
of the things children do in Kindergarten. Playing with the alphabet
in one form or another is something that happens in most classes.
Alphabet Adventure Gallery is a different way doing this. In this
project, children in your class will contribute to the creation
of a "Multimedia Alphabet book" (sound and pictures).
Of course, they will use technology as a tool to do it.
"To promote language development and to use technology to
create a stimulating environment in which children will explore
the sounds of letters, the meaning of words and the communication
of meaning through verbal and non-verbal means."
When you Register,
your class will be assigned a letter. Your students will draw pictures
on paper or on the computer of things beginning with that particular
letter or they can build something too. The pictures drawn on paper
will be scanned, the constructions, photographed (digitally). Then,
you will record the student explaining what their picture stands
for. For example, "'W' is for whale...", or "Whale
begins with W". A simple interface lets you place these
pictures and sounds on the Web.
The resulting set of Alphabet Books
is interactive, which means that the students can visit
them to see/hear their work. They also get to see everyone
else's work, as the entire collection of Alphabet Books will
be full of pictures and sounds. (See a sample)
While exploring the site students become better acquainted with
the alphabet and they learn the conventions and symbols associated
with computers (mouse, monitor, keyboard, symbols used to navigate
on a web page, etc.)
Your class also receives a Web Space
(See Sample)
to create, simply and automatically, a page where they can talk
about themselves and their project, where you can post pictures
of the class or the children's activities and productions. Use it
as a way to help them reflect on what they are doing. It is also
intended to create a link with parents, friends and family who can
visit this page and write messages.
All the information you need for registration
and for project completion is in the navigation menu. Take a look
at each area for a complete picture.
This is a "Learn-by-Doing"
Project. To begin with, you simply need to know how to send
and receive E-mail and how to reply to an E-mail message. The rest
you will learn as you participate in the project. Support will be
given by me via email and in person from your local RECIT consultant.
